Love the dress but...lots of buts!

I watched this dress for ages, looking for a Medium and I always loved the design as shown in the photo. When you look at a closeup of the photo, it shows lovely draping, particularly in the bust area. The actual dress doesn't quite match the photo. The straps are considerably narrower, and where the top gathers onto the straps...well, there aren't gathers. The gathers shown above the waist band are about 1/4 of what you see in the photo, just barely any at all. The color is fairly true, a charcoal-steel blue color which I like. The material is nice, drapey, but extremely stretchy and quite thin, which creates issues with how it fits. Despite its shortcomings, I liked the basic look enough to keep and "fix" things as best I could since I know how to sew, although frankly, I shouldn't need to do this sort of adjusting for a dress at this price point. I had to take up the straps a good two inches (done from the back side where the straps meet back part of the dress. I had to blind tack the front wrap to keep it closed. Beyond all this, the dress hangs horribly uneven, with the back noticeably shorter than the front, and both sides drooping down a noticeably. I don't believe this was intentional design. Perhaps it's a result of the basic design with the front gathers coming off the waistband (but flat on the sides, no gathers there). The hemline just doesn't look good, unfortunately, it just looks cheap and uneven. I probably should have returned the dress, but once I got things adjusted it looked a lot better (except for the hem) and I really liked how it looked on me. Size reference: 5'7", 142 lbs, 32DD on top. It looked longer on me than in the photo, a couple of inches above the knee. I bought a Medium, and the fit was basically correct except for the way too long strap issues, which dropped the whole thing too low in front and in the armpits. Once I took up the straps, the fit was good and I think a small would have been tighter than I wanted in the bust area. So the idea of the dress was good, the photo looks fabulous (wish the dress really looked like that), but a lot of the aspects of this dress need adjusting. If you are able to modify the dress and like it enough, go for it, so I recommend the dress only with these reservations.

I am normally a size 8-10, so I ordered a Medium and I had to have the straps taken up a inch or so because it drooped so low under the armpit. It also was low on the chest, but that wasn't as bad as the armpit area. Still love it though.

This dress is just beautiful -- I love the color, the soft drape, great design. I wish it were a little longer but that is a minor issue, and the only reason I'm not rating this a full 5 stars. Unlike many Sundance pieces, it seems to run a little large, but that makes it fine for me as I am a Woman of Substance. Finally a Sundance dress I can keep and wear! I will be interested to see how this fabric wears.

I ordered according to size chart and was too big - have reordered the smaller size but it is on back order. Hopw to get it before the weather changes again. I'm usually a 6/8 in a dress and the medium was too big - if that helps anyone.
